EeB PPP Technology Brochures 2018

ECTP has just issued the 2018 edition of the EeB PPP Promising Technologies Brochures that showcase successful technologies with a high market potential identified among the EeB PPP projects.
Freescoo is one of the 5 innovations selected for the HVAC & Lighting Solutions topic of this brochure.

This technology brochure highlights the highly promising innovations from selected co-funded European projects under the
7th Framework Program (FP7) and the 8th Framework Program (H2020).
The Energy-Efficient Buildings (EeB) Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC) and the Energy Efficient Buildings Committee of the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP).
This initiative aims at promoting research on new methods and technologies to reduce the energy footprint and CO2 emissions related to new and retrofitted buildings across Europe.

Future of cooling – IEA

The International Energy Agency has released a special report about energy efficiency: “The future of cooling. Opportunities for energy-efficient air conditioning“.

Here the words of Fatih Birol the Executive Director of IEA:

“Growing demand for air conditioners is one of the most critical blind spots in today’s energy debate. Setting higher efficiency standards for cooling is one of the easiest steps governments can take to reduce the need for new power plants, cut emissions and reduce costs at the same time.”

Solar cooling demand

Solarinvent recently mentioned by Solarthermalword in an interesting article about the rising demand for solar thermal cooling in Italy, Spain and the Middle East in 2017. is a new and global knowledge-based web portal for solar thermal professionals. It offers the latest news and background information on the development of the international solar thermal sector.
This unique website forms a worldwide forum for experts on solar thermal technology and those interested in the development of the market. It is hosted by the Global Solar Thermal Energy Council (GSTEC), a collaborative platform between industry, research institutions and NGOs. Managed by the International Copper Association (ICA), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

IEA SHC Task 53

Solar Cooling describes the use of solarenergy (thermal or PV) to provide air-conditioning or cooling for food preservation. The goal of a 4-year project (Task53) within the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme of the International Energy Agency is to assist a strong and sustainable market development of solar PV new innovative thermal cooling systems.

One day after the final Task meeting the Solar Cooling Workshop hosted by ILK Dresden presents some major results of Task 53 to the public. Several additional presentations from industry, researchers, consultants and architects will give a broad overview of recent developments in the sector.

4th ZERO-PLUS progress meeting

On the 21st and 22nd of September 2017, Solarinvent joined the 4th ZERO-PLUS progress meeting, that took place in Chania, Greece . The meeting was hosted by the project partner TUC (Technical University of Crete). The main focus of the meeting was on the status and planning for the construction of the case studies but also on the integration of the ZERO-PLUS technologies in the design.

In Palermo the 3rd meeting of Zero Plus project

From the 15th to the 17th of March 2017 in Palermo (Italy)  the 3rd progress meeting of Zero Plus project, funded by EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020, took place. The aim of ZERO-PLUS (Acronym of “Achieving near Zero and Positive Energy Settlements in Europe using Advanced Energy Technology”) research project is to search for buildings design for new highly energy performing buildings. In this project a comprehensive, cost-effective modular system for Net Zero Energy settlements will be developed and implemented in four case studies across Europe (in Italy, United Kingdom, Cyprus and France).

The partners are working together even by periodic meetings to develop an innovative and readily implementable system for near zero energy residential neighbourhoods that will significantly reduce their costs. Among the innovative technologies used to implement Zero Plus project there is also freescoo system patented by Solarinvent.

Enel’s Innovation Lab in Catania

On Saturday March 4th Solarinvent has been invited to the presentation of Enel’s Innovation Lab in Catania. Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni partecipated in the presentation and affirmed the primary role of green economy in Italy. In this occasion Enel CEO Francesco Starace presented the company’s investment programme of over 100 million euros in the Sicilian technology hub. Planned investment for the project includes over 80 million euros for the 3Sun solar PV panel factory and 20 million euros for the Innovation Lab. Thanks to this contribution the center, already the HQ for laboratories for the testing of new energy technologies, will become a tech campus and an accelerator for young entrepreneurs in Italy and internationally.

Solarinvent at BIAT2017

Solarinvent joined the third edition of BIAT – Innovation and High Technology Lab held in Catania at “Le Ciminiere” on 2-3 March 2017.
The event, promoted by ITA – Italian Trade Agency, showcases the innovation and excellence of enterprises and research systems in Italy’s Convergence Regions (Campania, Calabria, Apulia and Sicily).
BIAT aims to promote the placing on the market and/or the transfer of innovative products and services or high technology and intangible assets (patents in particular) by matching commercial and technology supply and demand between startups, innovative SMEs, business networks, universities, technology parks and foreign counterparts.
Solarinvent presented freescoo system to companies, research centers and investors from all over the world.

Zero plus Project goes forward

During the workshop “Smart Buildings for a greener Europe: Emerging Policy and Practice” led by EASME (Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises) in Malta on the 14 February 2017 ZERO-PLUS was mentioned as a good Horizon 2020 project example with this motivations:
•  Demonstrate positive energy settlement
•  Manage energy loads between NZEB using smart micro-grid and energy storage
•  Achieve 16% investment cost reduction using a modular system
The aim of Zero plus project is to achieve near zero and positive energy settlements in Europe using advanced energy technology. This 4 years long project is supported by The European Union Funding for Research & Innovation, Horizon 2020.
Freescoo is one of the technologies that will be installed in some of the 100% sustainable buildings.

freescoo in Marrakech

In the framework of an international bilateral cooperation between the Agence Marocaine pour l’Efficacité Energétique (AMEE) and the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS), a freescoo Air Handling Unit was installed at the library of AMEE (previously known as ADEREE) in Marrakech in October 2016. The project is managed by the Italian University Politecnico di Milano and has been carried out with the collaboration of the company Pleion which delivered the solar evacuated tube collectors.

The freescoo unit is going to be installed next week, exactly in time for the upcoming COP22 in Marrakech. AMEE is one of the supporter of this global event, and this is surely an important opportunity of visibility for freescoo and Solarinvent.

COP22 Marrakech 2016

The “Conference of the Parties”, COP is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Until now, there have been twenty-one COPs, with the most recent one organized in Paris this past December. The next one, COP22 is scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco from November 7 to 18, 2016.


The Convention stipulates,”Parties should protect the climate system for the benefit of present and future generations on the basis of equity and in accordance with their common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.”

During the COP, member States, who have common but differentiated responsibilities, strive to reach agreements on reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity, assess the evolution of their commitments and review the implementation of the Framework Convention and other legal instruments that the COP adopts. Typically a series of negotiating sessions are carried out beforehand in order to optimize the agenda and discussions.

As of today there are 197 Parties to the Convention (196 States and the European Union).

6th International Conference on Solar Air-Conditioning

From 23 to 25 of September 2015 in Rome, took place the “6th International Conference on Solar Air-Conditioning”, an important meeting for around 50 experts in Solar Cooling from all over the world, that join together the first day for the workshop “New Generation Solar Cooling & Heating Systems” and then, for the two-days conference.

The event was organized by the German company East-Bavarian Institute for Technology Transfer, OTTI, and offered several points of discussion around the chance to compete economically with conventional cooling solutions.

We also took part in the conference with freescoo and a contribution of Pietro Finocchiaro about “Energy performances and life cycle assessment of advanced solar DEC freescoo units”, as showed in this poster available for download (pdf, 4MB).

Solar dryer

From the collaboration between Solarinvent and Tauro Essiccatori was born a prototype of a solar food dryer that uses the solar heat to store food.

From 15 to 17 July, you can find our freescoo food dryer in Milano at the solar kiosk that has been realized by the Department of Energy of the Politecnico di Milano within the frame of a project of the Ministry of Environment and Expo 2015.
It aims at making aware on issues such climate change and food safety, carbon footprint of food and the use of innovative and sustainable technologies in agricultural production.

AICARR conference ENEA

The 4th of May 2015 freescoo has been presented during the AICARR conference in the principle headquarters of ENEA, Roma. Large number of positive feedback from specialists of air conditioning sector. Finally something of new and revolutionary!

First Prototype

In 2013 the first prototype of freescoo was realized to test thermodynamic cycle and the first real functioning of the system. This prototype can already drive ventilation, dehumidification and cooling of air in a compact configuration.

The installation of this unit requires only air duct of delivery and recovery, one idraulic connection to the grid and one electric connection at 220V. Weight of the whole machine is around 150 kg, with a solar collector of 2 m². Maximum air flow rate is 500 m³/h; maximum electric comsumption is 200 W and maximum cooling power is 2,2 kW (T out=35°C; RH out=50%; T in=27°C; RH in=50%). Collected data obtained in hundreds hour of working have showed the validity of the concept and good performance of the prototype. Thanks to this first attempt and to collected data, it has been possible to find improvements and optimization of the technology to increase performance in successive machines.
