At the Research Center of ENEA Casaccia (Rome), it has been installed a prototype for a study of the freescoo system in air conditioning applications in tertiary environments. In this specific case freescoo was installed in a test room, to realize air circulation as shown in UNI 10339, according with specific characteristics of temperature, humidity and purity.

Solar collector surface: 4.8 m²
Plan dimensions: 2.4 x 2 m²
Air flow into the room: 1000 m³ / h
Air flow of renewal: 500 m³ / h
Cooling capacity max: 5.5kW (Test = 35 ° C Xest = 14 g / kg)
Electrical power consumption: 0.25kW
The system and the room are controlled by a LabVIEW platform of supervision and management that captures and stores all the operating parameters to study the performances of freescoo.
With this prototype some characteristics of the technologies used in the freescoo system were tested with particular attention to overcoming the traditional limitations encountered in the use of solar cooling systems:
– Greater energy efficiency, thanks to the innovative DEC technology in cooled packed bed;
– Reduction of the cost of production and installation of the system due to a lower structural complexity;
– Optimization for operating in off-grid mode.
Some optimizations were introduced during the tests in the logic of management of the system, to face some critical points and inefficiencies, solved with design improvements and with more effective use of the components. The functional tests performed have verified the suitability of the system for applications in the tertiary sector. The obtained results have shown that it is possible to meet the needs of ventilation and air treatment at an energy cost close to zero. In particular, the photovoltaic / battery system used in this configuration enable the unit to operate in stand-alone mode for several days.
